Abstract

This article presents a thematic bibliographic analysis of international higher education rankings, using data from the Scopus database and the VOSviewer software. To this end, it adopts the perspective that bibliometric metrics, due to their graphical objectivity, can be used to reveal situations, scenarios, and movements—academic, political, social, and economic—that are not explicitly stated and, therefore, open up a more in-depth interpretative view of the identified data. Accordingly, the primary objective of the study was to investigate the global relevance of educational rankings, highlighting the main countries that allocate financial and institutional resources to understand their importance, impact, and operational mechanisms. Secondly, it analyzed how Brazilian universities are engaging in the internationalization movement and adapting their operations to achieve world-class university status. Furthermore, in this direction, the study sought to identify the most prominent authors in this field of research, particularly in Latin America, as well as their academic affiliations with universities and funding institutions. Finally, the discussion focused on the role of educational public policies and university governance in the strategic use of metrics, demonstrating their potential to transform institutions into competitive and innovative organizations on an international scale.
