Abstract

This work aimed to report the importance of the obligation of the Libras course for students of the Bachelor's Degree in Library Science, as a way of developing skills aimed at assisting deaf users in their information units. It reports through a literature review in the scope of Pedagogy and Library Science that such a discipline is essential, as an inclusive and communicational factor for those who use it. It emphasizes the social character of librarianship, which aims to promote access to cultural goods and the promotion of citizenship to those who are socially invisible at many times. It maps, reports and highlights the Brazilian federal universities that have this discipline in their undergraduate courses, emphasizing those that offer the discipline as mandatory. It recommends and justifies the urgent need to insert this subject as a mandatory component in the curricula of bachelor's degrees in librarianship, as librarians, through their work, are part of the team that acts as an educating agent, whether in school, university or public libraries. It highlights the role of the librarian (a) as a professional who promotes social transformation through his work to promote reading, access to books and information, as indispensable components for the realization of citizenship for all who need it.
